From Under 14 to Under 21 inclusive, we have been engaged for the last number of years with our neighbours Seir Kieran. This arrangement has proven to be mutually beneficial to both clubs who would be unable to field teams in these age groups on their own. At most of these age levels teams play in the ‘A’ Leagues and championship which exposes players to compete against their peers at the highest level.

While championship success has evaded us to date, there have been some memorable performances and victories, including reaching the Minor Hurling final in 2014. We have however seen success at national level in the 2014 Feile Competition when a combined Drumcullen/Seir Kieran’s outfit defeated Clare champions Crusheen/Tubber by the narrowest of margins. In many clubs throughout the country, this age demographic is where the greatest drop-out rates occur. The club goals at this level are three-fold:

  • Encourage the further development of our players beyond Academy level
  • Create an environment which attracts players to ‘Stay in the Game’
  • Develop a culture which sustains our players into adult hurling.

While our players would have developed the required basic skills from their academy years, the focus now changes to ensure each individual has the correct tools to compete with their peers and therefore progress in the adult ranks, these skills include

  • Technical
  • Tactical
  • Physical
  • Mental Development

The club is cognisant of the many demands on young players through adolescence while pursuing their vital educational needs. There are also the many dangers they must deal with such as bullying, substance abuse and peer pressure.

The Drumcullen G.A.A. Club is committed to ensuring, as far as possible, a safe and secure environment in which we are sensitive to the issues and problems our young people may be experiencing either on the field or beyond.
