‘I’m a Celeb’ -Night

After all the hard work of the previous three months of fundraising, the moment of truth came on Friday night last for the 24 ‘I’m a celeb’ contestants. In front of an audience of over 600 people in the Tullamore Court Hotel the 24 contestants were eventually whittled down to two contestants after a series of ‘eating’ competitions and challenges. With Pio Spillane just getting the edge in the eating challenge, to be crowned ‘The King of the Jungle’.  The night proved to be a fantastic night’s entertainment for all who attended and ran into the early hours with the assistance of ‘Rock on Paddy’. The club would like to sincerely thank all the Contestants for their time and effort they put into the fundraising over the past three months, the sponsors for money donated, the main sponsor Leamore Construction Ltd. and to the people of the community both far and wide that support all the events over the past couple of months and all those who came out and support the contestants on Friday night last. A full tally of the money raised will be announced in the coming weeks when all funds are in.

‘Hurling with The Stars’

Offaly Masters 1994 2-7

Offaly Masters 1998 3-4.

This could hardly be described as a thrilling draw but it was definitely one of the most enjoyable evenings enjoyed by a huge crowd in Rath on Saturday evening. Sean Guinan, a former club secretary, as part of his ‘Celebrity’ fundraiser organised a match between the heroes of ’94 and ’98 and others. Many of these great players turned out and with a highly entertaining commentary by Brian Gavin, assisted by his accomplices Johnny Flaherty and Pat Fleury, fun was the order of the day. Having said so we were also treated to some of the skills and abilities of players who have rightly become folk heroes at home and beyond. Great credit is due to Sean and his organising committee and also to the club committee who assisted with arrangements on the day. Many thanks to all the players who contributed to such a memorable evening; our two referees Shane and Kieran; Johnny Butterfield and the other members of the Mountbolus Pipe Band who led the players in  parade; our own U13 players who provided an entertaining curtain-raiser; the ladies and gentlemen who provided refreshments; those assisting with car-parking and turnstiles; those who provided sponsorship in various ways and of  course those mentioned above. Indeed, all associated with the event should take a bow. The McCarthy Cup was also there – on temporary release thanks to Pat Fleury -, and proved an attractive presence for young and older.

I’m a Celebrity Fundraiser

Also big thanks to all who supported the kids Disco on Friday evening last and the 5k run on Sunday.

Senior ‘B’ Hurling Championship

Drumcullen 0-16

Lusmagh 0-14

Trailing 0-8 to 0-7 at the break, Drumcullen put in a decent second half performance to edge this game played in lovely conditions in Kinnitty on Saturday evening. This game could have gone either way and Lusmagh will probably rue some missed chances while Drumcullen used limited possession to good effect. In the course of the game Drumcullen were awarded a meagre two frees in the opposition half in the entire game. While there might be a case on some refereeing decisions, it also reflects a dearth of possession won in that area over the hour. On the other hand Drumcullen conceded many needless frees and were fortunate that some were not converted. It is unusual to single out any individual player for mention, on this occasion Ray Gath must be applauded for an outstanding contribution, not only in his five points from play from midfield but also his work-rate in both defence and attack. Drumcullen have collected full points from their two games and players and management must take credit for this situation heading into the long summer break. Team: E. Gath, D. Mahon, D. Guinan, D. Maher, J. Cashin, P. Guinan, C. Guinan, K. Fleury, R. Gath (0-5), S. Hanrahan (0-1), D. Gath,(0-1), Colm Gath (0-3), M. Kennedy, Conor Gath (0-5), D. Spain (0-1). Subs used: H. Ryan, J. Murray

Senior ‘B’ Hurling Championship

Drumcullen 0-22

Carrig & Riverstown 0-16

Drumcullen led all the way in this hard-fought tie at Crinkle on Sunday morning. Leading 0-8 to 0-4 after 20 minutes, C&R then hit a purple patch giving a half-time score of 0-9 each. Drumcullen re-established the lead on the resumption and with some improved individual performances were never seriously troubled from there to the finish. The performance was enough on the day but a distinct improvement will be required before next Saturday’s 5pm start versus Lusmagh in Kinnitty. Team: E. Gath, B. O’Meara D. Guinan, D. Maher, B. Kinsella, P. Guinan J. Cashin,(0-2) C. Guinan, R. Gath (0-1), S. Hanrahan, D. Gath (0-2), Colm Gath(0-5), M. Kennedy (0-1), Conor Gath (0-11), P. Cashin. Subs: D. Mahon, K. Fleury, J. Murray and H.
